I read Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Image
Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie My rating: 4 of 5 stars I loved reading Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. ❤ The book is about a Nigerian girl who moves to the US for university. Living all her life in Nigeria, she has never perceived race as a problem, and getting to America, she recognizes herself as black and what race means to the American culture. It is a powerful book. As someone who has immigrated from South America to North America, there were a lot of relatable topics. I have wanted to read immigrant literature for a while, and I feel like I made a great choice to start things up. The only downside is that the book was a little longer than needed. I feel like about 100 pages could be cut out, and the ending was a little rushed. Still, it's a fantastic book! Cheers everybody! View all my reviews

Night Sky with Exit Wounds by Ocean Vuong My rating: 5 of 5 stars This was a fantastic experience. I am a huge fan of Ocean Vuong's work. The way he works with language and its relation with the body fascinates me every time I get through his writing. Every poem was worth starting over as soon as it was finished. Five stars! I read The Sword of Kaigen by M.L. Wang and I was intrigued!

Image
The Sword of Kaigen by M.L. Wang My rating: 5 of 5 stars I was not going to give 5 stars to this book, because I had a lot of issues going through the first 60% of it. There are some poorly executed transitions between timelines in the first few chapters. In the end, the story seemed to open a new arc that would never close... Still, regardless of its flaws, this is an absolute masterpiece. Very clumsy, but still a masterpiece. The action is like Avatar: The Last Airbender on steroids. If you liked the concept of elemental bending, you'd see it go to its full extent in this book. The characters were so real and heavy, and the story was so dark. Still, the author managed to wrap up the story in a way that warms your heart. It's impossible to read the book without feeling pissed off at Takeru for the most significant part of the fucking book. There was no way not to empathize with Misaki after having to put up with Takeru. I loved the story. It made me incredibly fond of all

I read The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches, and it was super cozy!

The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna My rating: 4 of 5 stars This book was aimed to be cozy, and it really did a wonderful job. 🤗 I really enjoyed the fantasy and world-building aspect of this book. 🧙🏻‍♀️🧙🏻‍♀️ The romance was notoriously boring, but everything else was a lot of fun. I do have to say that a smut scene in the middle of so much cuteness made me feel a little violated! 😳 This book made me feel like eating scones with cream and jam for the first time in years, which was great. 🍰🍵 Also, this book contains one of the cutest fictional dogs ever! Mika's dog, Circe, is literally described as annoyingly well-behaved!! What else do you want? 🤗 I was going to give 3 starts, but just because of the dog, this went to 4 starts. 🐕 Cheers! 🎉 View all my reviews

I read Bleach Vol. 1 by Tite Kubo, and... it's very mid!

Image
Bleach, Vol. 1 by Tite Kubo My rating: 2 of 5 stars I just finished reading Bleach vol. 1, and... it's very mid! 😅 I read this because of The Manga Squad, a reading group from Goodreads that I am a part of. 📚 I know it is one of the biggest names in Manga and Anime right now, but it felt so stiff and unoriginal. Progressing to future volumes would probably make me enjoy it a little more, but what I had so far was not enough to keep me interested. 😓 The boy sees ghosts trope was not that interesting anymore, at least not how it was executed. The comedy was not funny, and there was even a transphobic joke, which is never the best, but it is shonen manga, so what did I expect? 😣 The ending was even worse with the evil Parakeet. Come on, folks, that was just silly. 🤡 I will not read volume 2, but if you absolutely LOVE Bleach and think it MUST be read over other manga, please let me know your reasons. I'd love to try to understand. 🧐 Happy Saturday to everyone! 🎉🎉 View

I read JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Part 1— Phantom Blood, Vol. 2, and I Really liked it!

Image
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Part 1—Phantom Blood, Vol. 2 by Hirohiko Araki My rating: 4 of 5 stars I just finished my second volume of Jojo's, and things have definitely improved. 🎉🎉 The artwork is AMAZING, excellent stuff. I really like Jonathan Joestar!! 🥰🤭 Things got interesting. Dio is a fantastic villain. I loved the references to historical figures. They made things pop out and get a little brighter, at least for me. 🧛🏻‍♂️🧟🏻‍♂️ The dialogue still seems harsh. I am not sure if the translation or the fact that it was the 80's, but things look very blunt, with no foreshadowing. However, that does make for a Bizarre Adventure I guess. 🤔 Anyway... you can count me in as a Jojo fan as of now!! 🥳🥳 I am anxious to get the next volume, which is already on hold in my local library. 🤗 View all my reviews
