I read Yellowface by R. F. Kuang and it was one of my favorite books of 2023!

Image
Yellowface by R.F. Kuang My rating: 5 of 5 stars I finished reading Yellowface yesterday and... I absolutely loved it! I was going through a long phase of reading only fantasy/sci-fi and reading something so contemporary was a great refresher. June Hayward sees her talented writer friend Athena Liu die in front of her eyes while they are hanging out at Athena's apartment when June decides to grab the manuscripts from Athena's apartment before she leaves. June proceeds to publish Athena's last book under the name of Juniper Song, a book about a lost episode of Chinese history. The book explores the publishing process that takes books from an author's computer to the shelves of a bookstore. The book also debates racism, feminism, cancel culture, mental disorders, etc. All of that is in only about 300 fast-paced and extremely funny pages. No wonder this book won the Goodreads Choice Award for Fiction 2023. However, I can definitely see that it may not be for everyone, s

I just finished reading The Forsaken Planet by Bryan Wilson and it was fun!

The Forsaken Planet by Bryan Wilson My rating: 4 of 5 stars I had a lot of fun reading The Forsaken Planet! Last night I finished this book, and I realized how much I was invested. I ate up the final 30% of the book. In a universe where different planets are inhabited by humans capable of controlling the power of the stars called Solara, Earth was the only human planet where these powers have been forgotten. An ancient prophecy claims that the one who wields the power of the stars on Earth is the Son of the Prophets and will lead humanity to Salvation. The MC Colton survives an attack of alien forces on Earth and is suspected to have wielded Solara in the night when the attack took place. The journey leads us to Vintara, a distant planet with a purplish tone to its atmosphere where most of the action will take place. The book is a very detailed sci-fi saga that brings classic and fantasy elements to the game, resulting in an immersive experience for the reader. The biggest quality

I just finished reading Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros... AND ...

Image
Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros My rating: 3 of 5 stars I finished reading Fourth Wing and... I hate it! But, I liked it! But I hate it! But it's really cool! But, oh my god! No, don't! But, it's okay, I liked it it. Kinda. I guess. It was the biggest book on the internet in 2023, so I decided to give it a shot. First of all, if you don't hate Dain after reading this book, please rethink your actions. There were moments I wanted to physically enter the book and hit him. I liked Violet, but I know a gentleman who recently begged to disagree with this, and omg what is he? Probably a puppy murderer, and as soon, as fucking soon, as he said that he hated Violet, I started hating her myself. But, I like her. And Xaden? Don't even get me started. I am ugh, I don't know. The dragons are great. The flying lion chickens are lame. The other things (the ones you know I'm talking about if you read the book, but hopefully you don't if you didn't) were really coo

I read Red Rising by Pierce Brown and I fucking loved it!

Image
Red Rising by Pierce Brown My rating: 5 of 5 stars Okay, let's talk about Red Rising! I ended up reading this book because it was super hyped, at least on my bookstagram feed. It's like you're all reading Red Rising. To be honest, I did not enjoy the first 50% of this book. I had to kind of work through it. I was bitter and upset, and I thought I would be the odd one who hated this book and wanted nothing to do with it. I thought this would be just Hunger Games going to Mars, but the last 50% proved me wrong. As Darrow advanced with his plan and the game fastened its pace, things went wild. There were incredible action scenes. I loved Sevro and the Howlers, and I loved how Darrow fought through it all. I could not stop myself from putting the second book of the series on hold on the library app, and I may consider buying physical copies to have the whole series if it keeps going as the first book went. If you're wondering why I constantly rate 5 stars, it's becau

I read Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Image
Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie My rating: 4 of 5 stars I loved reading Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. ❤ The book is about a Nigerian girl who moves to the US for university. Living all her life in Nigeria, she has never perceived race as a problem, and getting to America, she recognizes herself as black and what race means to the American culture. It is a powerful book. As someone who has immigrated from South America to North America, there were a lot of relatable topics. I have wanted to read immigrant literature for a while, and I feel like I made a great choice to start things up. The only downside is that the book was a little longer than needed. I feel like about 100 pages could be cut out, and the ending was a little rushed. Still, it's a fantastic book! Cheers everybody! View all my reviews

I read Night Sky With Exit Wounds by Ocean Vuong

Night Sky with Exit Wounds by Ocean Vuong My rating: 5 of 5 stars This was a fantastic experience. I am a huge fan of Ocean Vuong's work. The way he works with language and its relation with the body fascinates me every time I get through his writing. Every poem was worth starting over as soon as it was finished. Five stars!
